Audition Announcement!!!!
Female Small Ensemble Singer-Actors – Role of “Forest Women”
in Broadcast Opera Project Vireo
Audition date – June 7, 2015, afternoon (20-minute slots)
Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) in Santa Ana, CA, a unit of Cal State University Fullerton’s College of the Arts, is holding auditions for 4-6 female singer-actors, of any voice part and any age, to appear as part of the small ensemble of Forest Women in a newly composed opera by composer Lisa Bielawa, Librettist Erik Ehn and directed by Charlie Otte. The role of the “Forest Women” at this point is being cast as volunteer positions, but will provide opportunity for onscreen appearance, credits and direct engagement with Vireo team.
GCAC is looking for a broad range of ages, voice types and body types to sing in close harmony and appear on camera in the recording and taping of the fourth episode of “Vireo,” an opera created and released in episodes. The Forest Women will participate in one day of taping between August 12-15, 2015. Each episode is filmed in front of a live audience and distributed locally and worldwide via multi-platform broadcast through partnership with KCET. The fourth episode will feature celebrated harpist Bridget Kibbey, Mezzo-Soprano Laurie Rubin, baritone Gregory Purnhagen, drummer Matthias Bossi, and in the title role of Vireo, 17-year-old soprano Rowen Sabala. Forest Women will appear and sing with Laurie Rubin, who sings the role of The Witch.
Auditions for the role are open to all female singers, ages 8-80. The selected singers will have an opportunity to work with a professional artistic team and a distinguished roster of artists, giving them national as well as international exposure.
What to prepare – One vocal selection of their choice, in English.
A short excerpt from Vireo will be provided before the audition and will be taught in the context of the audition process.
Auditions will take place at GCAC, 125 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, CA 92701
