COGâ•NATE COLLECTIVE
Public Market + Public Research is a series of in-situ workshops facilitated by artists working in the greater LA/Tijuana transnational region, which invite students to explore the social + cultural character of a public market. Workshops will take place inside of the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet, and provide opportunities to learn about + put into practice aesthetic strategies for conducting research in public space.
The workshop series is organized by GCAC artists-in-residence Cogâ•nate Collective (Amy Sanchez and Misael Diaz) as part of the S.N.A. Project: AGORA, a collaboration with Cal State Fullerton Anthropology Professor Karen Stocker and her students to design an artistic intervention inside the Swap Meet this Spring.
WORKSHOP #01 // JIMENA SARNO AURAL RESEARCH
SUNDAY April 24 — 10:30AM – 2:30PM
The workshop facilitated by Jimena Sarno will focus on aural (audio) research strategies and collective listening models as processes to engage, document and learn about social landscapes. After a conversation on her practice, and an overview of audio recording + editing techniques, participants will venture throughout the market to produce an audio portrait of the social + cultural dynamics of the site.
About the artist:
Jimena Sarno is a multidisciplinary artist and organizer who works across a range of media including installation, sound, video, text and sculpture. Her practice encompasses research and production as an exploration of power relations, social control, and the construction of consensus through various forms of inclusion and exclusion. Sarno is interested in the ways in which the dominant culture shapes— sometimes subtly, sometimes violently—how we perceive, understand and accept the world and our place in it. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sarno currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
WORKSHOP #02 // MAGPIE COLLECTIVE COLLECTIVE ASSEMBLY
FRIDAY April 29 — 6PM – 9PM
The workshop facilitated by Collective Magpie will focus on strategies for designing + collaboratively building spaces for dialogue in public space. The workshop will take place inside of an inflatable structure that functions as a classroom, where participants will be able to learn about the group’s practice and collectively assemble a sculptural work that is informed (and can inform) our perception of migration.
About the artist:
Collective Magpie is Tae Hwang & MR Barnadas + Participants MR Barnadas & Tae Hwang are a transnational collaborative team. Under the name “Collective Magpie”, their work focuses on the creation of migratory collective forms, invoking and involving participation in the manifestation of their ephemeral and nomadic works. Through site- specific installations, exhibitions and public projects, their work seeks to inhabit and prolong a shared “moment of transit” while highlighting the temporal specificity of places and communities as part of a living, greater whole.
